It feels like the body is trying to expel alien toxins, but if that were the case wouldn't the body have tried to expel them long before trying to quit? or is the mechanism due to something else entirely?

I don't know but I think it is the body's way of showing you how sick it is, and that it would be better if you gave it the medicine it needs. Along with the sweats and everything, it's real vomiting, this is the only answer I can think of.
