Question: What are your thoughts of a person who drinks/takes methadone/drugs & smokes?

Hi Ses, Addiction is a disease however it can be controlled. The person using needs to make the decision themselves to stop and get help. You can't make someone stop which is very unfortunate! It takes a lot of counseling as there is underlying issues that they may not even know about. Sometimes it is depression or some sort of trauma like a death or car accident. When the person is in counseling (not all are good and not all work for everyone) the issue can surface and then they need to learn a new way to deal with the feelings. It is not an easy road! They don't realize how they hurt everyone around them. The disease tells them that it's ok to lie and steal to get what they want. The urge to use again and again is what causes them to do the things they do, it over rides any morals they were raised with. If you are dealing with someone that is using and they do get into a program - make sure it is longer than 30 days - see if you can find one that uses a course called Seeking Safety which teaches all the skills they will need to stay clean. Do some research and find a good program! Remember that telling them to stop will not work! I know you'd want to "fix " them but you can't! Another thing to remember is that when the person is back home your actions also need to be adjusted, drinking alcohol or having it in the house will be a trigger for them to start using again It may not have been the drug of choice but it will bring them right back again. Alcohol is a drug just the same as any illegal drug. As far as methodone goes, it is more addictive that the drugs they were using to begin with. It is brutal on the liver and makes brittle bones. Methodone is still a drug, it does not fix the problem, in SOME cases it keeps them from going out and risking their lives buying drugs on the street.In a LOT of cases the addict still uses while on methodone

Methadone is better then the real thing I guess... i used to be a alchohalic crack head so i can't preach... it gets boring

If they continue on with thaking the methadone they WILL become a recluse. I have lost many many friends to pot and meth. I am very scared of these drugs.

I think they should find a way out of doing those things to themselves, because they're probably going to throw their life away if they continue.
