Question: Someone i know is doing heroin...?

Recently, due to some pretty stupid circumstances a friend isn't talking to me anymore. I've known him for six or so years - he has gone from drinking heavily every night, to smoking pot on a regular basis, and now he's doing heroin. His girlfriend does it with him, and does much more herself when he's sleeping. (His roommate fills me in every so often.) They both have children, of which they obviously do not have custody, and right now it seems like that it is for the better. However, regardless of how bad of a parent he is, I don't want to see him fall into bad circumstances, or even worse, die; whether or not he wishes to speak with me... is there ANYTHING I can do beside confronting him on my own? I feel trying to speak with him would only aggravate him further. But on speaking terms or not, I still care and want to help get him better.

There's not a thing you can do to convince him to change his ways. Junkies must change from within or die, it's the nature of things. Just be there if he decides he's ready to change, and be his friend if he does so.

OH my heart goes out to you. He obviously needs to get help and unfortunately no one can make him go except the law. Heroine is one of the worst addicting drugs, try it once you're hooked. He needs to get away from that gf, You can try doing the old fashioned intervention with his friends and more important his family. I'm not sure if everyone else knows about it or not. But it is in his best interest. At this point it is a matter of saving his life. I would first confront him and tell him he needs help and that you are worried about him and his children. If he gets mad and tells you to butt out tell him you will go to his family and tell them about his problem. Then if he chooses not to be your friend or to not talk to you anymore someone else knows he has a problem. Saving his life is more important than worrying if he will still be his friend or if he is mad at you. People O.D. on heroine so much. It is so easy to do and every time he sticks him self with a needle he has a chance of dying. Staying back and doing nothing would just make you less of a friend. Maybe you will get lucky and he will get himself arrested then he'll get help in prison. (hopefully depending on where he gets sent, but he will not get the heroine he needs there) Heroine detox is not fun. I worked with young girls with serious addictions and most of them got hooked from their parents. His children need their father in their lives and as long as he is on drugs they won't be and may lose him if he dies forever. Make that point to him. Good luck. Pray for him, this is not going to be easy.

The best thing you can do is not to enable him -- if he comes to you for money, etc., don't fall for it, you'll be handing him a nail for his own coffin. Beyond that, he's going to have to hit bottom: only then will he be ready to straighten out. I wish I could give you guarantees, but I can't. He's going to straighten out, hopefully out of prison but sometimes in, or die. The best I can tell you is that more make it than not.
