Question: Heroin addiction, recovery and relapse?

It has happened to me. After nearly 3 years of recovery I relapsed and I’m fully addicted and physically dependant on heroin again. I don’t know what to do, I’m so ashamed of myself. None of my friends or family knows that I am using. My fiancé does not even know and she is in recovery too. I tried to quit a week ago, I made it 3 days but on the 4th day I was overwhelmed by anxiety and panic attacks. The only way I could relieve the panic attack was by using. I want help but I don’t know where to turn. I work at a small company and they don’t offer any health insurance benefits. Without any insurance I cant even get into detox or treatment. I’m so afraid to get honest with family friends because they will want me to stop immediately and get help, but where will I be able to get the help. I know the sooner I get honest the better but I can’t bring myself to do it. I finally got sober when I was 29 and I was so happy that when I turned 30 I was in recovery and I believed I would never go back to using. In two weeks I’ll be turning 32 years old and in the throws of addiction. I truly want to recover again and I want the process to begin as soon as possible. But with the herion I can’t just stop it’s not that simple no matter how strong my desire. I live in Minneapolis mn with my fiancé in our first home we bought last year. We have worked so hard In recovery to overcome challenges resulting from our past. For example I have a criminal record several pages long and struggle to find work. After a year of recovery my current employer took a chance on me and offered me a great job and a respectable salary. I fear now that I have relapsed it will cost me my job and eventually even lose my house and fiancé. Any suggestions?

I lived with panic attacks for 6 yrs. You can ride them out for a few days or a couple weeks if that is what it takes to save your life. If I had known then what I know now, I never would have had the panic attacks more than a few days. But hey, I learned a lot. The fact you made it three days means you can do it. Start again, do the same thing you did before, but be prepared. The panic attacks can be overcome, there are techniques, and as far as that goes, though I don't recommend it at all.. medications.. to help you get through it. You are better dealing with panic attacks, which feel like death but are not and won't actually kill you, then heroin addiction which is a one hundred percent certain ticket to a box in the ground.

Ask a Baptist church about a 12-step Christian addiction recovery group and start going. Sounds like you may need to have a personal relationship with God. God is our Creator, all-knowing, all-powerful, eternal, holy, love. God loves us and sent us His Son, Jesus Christ, so we can go to heaven if we know and follow Him. Forever means without end -- time on and on without death. Forever is what happens after we die. Either we go to heaven and be with God forever, or we go to hell which is very bad and painful forever. The good people who are saved believers in Jesus Christ go to heaven. The bad people go to hell. We need to know and follow God in this world to get to heaven in the next world. Jesus Christ, God's Son, is our bridge to God. Jesus died on the cross to cancel our sins. We need to accept Jesus into our life as our Lord and Savior forever to receive God's blessing and forgiveness plus go to heaven to be with God forever after we die. This is about being a born-again Christian. Faith in God is a gift from God. You can pray for faith in God. Just speak out and ask God for the faith to believe in Him and to follow Him. Some people find faith in God when they realize the beauty in the world is made by God. Evolution can't explain the world's natural beauty, for example, the parks in the world, animals, flowers, peacocks, sunsets, butterflies, rainbows, etc. After you have your faith on, you can pray a sinner's prayer to be a born-again Christian. This prayer is very important and should be said with a sincere heart and faith in God. This is the prayer: "Dear God, I know that I am a sinner and that Jesus Christ is the sacrifice for our sins. I have done the following sins (state these out) and I pray to discontinue these sins. I pray to receive Jesus Christ into my life as my Lord and Savior forever. In Jesus' name, amen. " You could find a Christian church and try it out. I'm Lutheran and I like the Baptist churches too. Some churches have a weekly Bible study group and these are a fun way to find out more about God and His will for your life. God bless.
