Millions have got sober and stayed sober with AA. It works if you work it. aa.org/ bigbookonline/ If nothing else, its good reading. Insightful in many ways aside from addictions. Once you are an addict, you always are. You recover and not use, but you are still an addict. Good luck to you, Friend of Bill |

As a person who has been in IOP several times, Rehab and AA/ NA I can say that it doesn't work What works is having the desire to stop. Although dependence is a hard thing and it tends to get out of hand and take you to the hospital (like it has done with me) After Detox and such... the only way to stop addiction is the desire to stop and self control . Detox is essential, I wont lie, but after that it is up to you. Go to detox if it is bad enough addiction and then have a desire to stop and stop It's hard I know, but the only way to stop is the desire to stop |

You need to put yourself in a situation where it's near to impossible to get your hands on your drug of choice. unfortunately, that is typically a rehab facility. good luck. |

It depends on a lot, especially what drug it is. I agree that a proper detox is important, especially when a person is addicted and physically dependent to opioids (narcotics), benzodiazepines, barbiturates, or alcohol. But not all addicts are dependent on a drug and many drugs do not cause physical dependency. There is no single answer, if I had the answer I would tell you. It is best to see a psychiatrist to detox (occasionally hospitalization is required) and many addicts have an underlying psychiatric problem so a psychiatrist can treat that. You should get a full physical examination from a doctor to make sure you are healthy. Some people think that something like AA or NA is required to get better but that it not true. Most people do get (and need) help so they go to support groups, individual therapy, and other things. But normally addicts need at least some help to get better. People normally can't do everything without help, even if it is just a psychiatrist. AA/ NA really preach that an addict requires other people and groups, again I don't really agree to that extent but most true addicts can't make themselves better. |

It may be more helpful to get professional help and sober assistance. But you can also attend 12 step meetings and get support from other individuals who know what you're going through. I hope that you get the help you need, good luck with everything. |
